Fix Your Credit History Before Applying for a Credit Card

Bad Credit History
Fix Your Credit History Before Applying for a Credit Card

Unfortunately there are many people in the world today that have problems with a bad credit history. This is mostly due to the increasing popularity of credit cards around the world and indeed there is a very positive correlation between the increasing number of people with credit cards and the increasing number of people with a bad credit history. The credit card effect is well known and has been documented many times over by many of the world’s foremost financial experts. Credit cards are dangerous because they have the ability to wipe a person’s good credit record off the face of the Earth and replace it with a bad credit history that reads out like a sad tale that includes impulsive purchases, running up of huge debts and then a subsequent inability to pay back the debts that have been incurred. It is a very common story within the world of personal credit. In music, many bands have one hit song and then fade into obscurity; in personal credit finance, many people have a great start only to end up with a pile of debt, a hopeless financial situation and a bad credit history.

If this sounds like you then there are many different things that are running through your mind at the current moment in time. In addition to your thoughts about how to resolve the bad credit history problem you currently find yourself in you might also be thinking about those television commercials that you’ve been seeing. These are commercials that promise to help you solve your debt problems instantaneously. The quick fix is a thing that many humans want and if you are in such dire straits as to be thinking about it then you might even think that it’s something you need.

If you don’t have any other recourse aside from bankruptcy then you are in a place where you are very vulnerable to people selling these types of services. There are so many companies around that are selling these types of services for people that had bad credit. No credit card company affiliates themselves with these services and you might think that in itself is enough endorsement for you to use one of these programs to help yourself out of the situation you are in. There are two different kinds of programs that are sold in this area: debt management plans and debt negotiation programs. This article will examine these two types of services in more detail to see if they are indeed worth investing what little money you have left.

Debt Management Plans (DMPs)

The first type of program that will be sold by many different companies is a debt management plan. These types of programs are essentially exactly what they sound like; they are a plan that will be given to you by a financial expert to help you get out of your bad credit history problem. The financial representative for the company will sit down and discuss the situation with you, getting particulars about information that they might find useful. Once they have discussed the situation with you they will go to your creditors and see if they can come up with a repayment schedule that will work for you as well as for your creditors. If the creditors feel that you have the ability to adhere to this schedule then they might agree to accept lower than their minimum each month in the hope that you will be able to pay everything back at the end of the payment schedule. This can be very useful to you because it can allow you to get yourself into a positive mindset and feel that you can improve your bad credit history and pay everyone back at the same time.

A word of caution with debt management plans however; many of them are very difficult to deviate from so when you agree to getting into one make sure that you are actually going to go ahead and pay everything back. Failure to do this could potentially result in your bad credit history getting even worse. Also, be very wary of companies that ask you to make an inordinate number of payments to them for their counseling services. A reputable company will only ask you for a percentage and a monthly fee. There will be no surprise expenses with a reputable company.

Debt Negotiation Programs (DNPs)

A bad credit history can sometimes push a person to go ahead and get the debt negotiation program started. A debt negotiation program is usually a scam however and for that reason you should be very wary when you start out with your debt negotiation program. Many of these people will use tactics that not only temporarily fix the problem but also end up making your bad credit history worse later on simply because you start to be viewed as being unethical in the way you tackle the problem. Even if the debt negotiation program is successful in removing your debt then they will actually just be transferring it over to a tax obligation on your part.

If you are interested in fixing your bad credit history you need to be realistic about your chances. Consider that you did not get yourself into this problem overnight and because of that it is perhaps not too intelligent for you to believe that you will be able to get yourself out of the problem overnight. There are many different things you can do in order to get your credit problems resolved and most of the time debt negotiation programs are not going to be one of those things.

Because of those debt problems that can appear when you have a credit card it is quite dangerous to have it. A person should think over all the pros and cons of having a credit card.
